Club Olympia, organized by Coach Alex DeLuna in 1997, just finished it's tenth season. Coach DeLuna organized the program in order to offer Laredo youth a unique opportunity to compete in regional and national events sanctioned by the AAU, including the prestigious AAU Junior Olympic Games. On several occasions during the last 10 years, part of the Club Olympia program has been to bring a nationally recognized athlete, who also represents a positive role model, to Laredo to address club participants. This is viewed as one of the more important events of the program, as it gives the Laredo athletes a chance to hear first hand accounts of obstacles encountered and difficulties overcome, by the speaker, as they progressed on their road to success in athletics and life. Past speakers at this event include Billy Mills--1964 Olympic Gold Medalist, Steve Scott—American record holder in the mile run, Peter Snell—1960 and 1964 Olympic Gold Medalist and Tim Montgomery—1996 Olympic Silver Medalist. College Athletic Scholarships have also been awarded to Club Olympia athletes: Twenty-two ‘All American Athletes’, the designation given to gold medal winners at the Junior Olympic Games, have come from the Club Olympia program, winning 29 gold medals. In 1997, Angeles Pantoja won the gold medal in the 800 meter run. In 2000 and 2001, Eddie Gonzalez won the gold medal in the 2000 meter steeplechase setting a new national record in 2000, shattering the old record by 17 seconds. In 2001, Michelle Inocencio and Michelle Elizondo were National Champions in their age groups in the javelin and shot put, respectively. In 2002, Jonathan Burton and Adrian Romanos were gold medalists in the young men’s decathlon and 2000m steeplechase, respectively. In 2003, Michelle Inocencio won her second gold medal in the javelin, and Fidel Velasquez won gold in the intermediate boys decathlon. In 2004, the club boasted the addition of 9 more gold medals. Roel Elizalde won a gold medal in the young men's 2000m steeplechase. Jose Troncoso won gold in the young men's javelin event. Also in the javelin, Emalie Humphreys and Diego Mascorro took the top honors in intermediate girls and youth boys respectively, with Humphreys setting a new national record. Fernando Troncoso won a gold medal in the youth boys shot put. Then two sets of twins, Kathryn and Frances Hearn, and Jennifer and Michelle Griedl combined their efforts in the 4x800 young women's relay to win first place. In 2005, 8 gold medals were awarded to club athletes. Teresa Contreras won a gold medal in the young women's high jump. In young women's and young men's javelin, respectively, Emalie Humphreys and Kelby Kerby garnered top honors, with Humphreys setting a new national record in her age group. Kathryn Hearn took home a gold in the young women's 1500 meter run, while joining her sister, Frances, Cristina Guevara, and Brenda Ceja in the 4x800 relay to gain the team's second gold. In 2006, the club brought home 3 gold medals. Hugo Ramirez won the high jump in his age group, while the brother-sister duo Sam and Emalie Humphreys won the intermediate boys and young women's javelin events. Emalie reset the national record in her event.
